Guy Godin, the developer of Virtual Desktop, recently released a beta version of a feature called Synchronous Spacewarp (SSW) via Reddit. According to reports, Virtual Desktop's SSW is similar to Facebook's Asychronous Spacewarp (ASW). But the difference between the two is that the interpolation of asynchronous space warping occurs on the PC side, while the synchronous space warping occurs on the headset side. This means that the function can support any GPU without affecting the PC performance of ASW.
After being deleted for a while, Virtual Desktop has restored the PC VR streaming function. Quest users can directly access SteamVR and Rift content libraries through Virtual Desktop. Of course, another option for users is to use Facebook's Air Link wireless streaming technology.
When the graphics card cannot meet the frame rate requirements, Air Link can initiate asynchronous space warping like Oculus Rift, forcing the running application to render at half the refresh rate, and inferring a composite frame after each real frame, thereby solving the problem .
Now Virtual Desktop provides a function with a similar principle, but the difference is that the distortion of the synchronization space occurs on the headset side.
Developer Godin said that in order to achieve this goal, he worked closely with Qualcomm, using the motion estimation capabilities of Qualcomm XR2 to achieve the interpolation function on the head-end display. Of course, SSW currently only supports Quest 2.
The video below compares Facebook's asynchronous space warp and Virtual Desktop's synchronous space warp. It can be seen that ASW can maintain the smooth progress of the overall picture, but the problem of hand and finger tearing artifacts is quite obvious. In comparison, SSW handles hands and fingers significantly better.
Of course, SSW is not perfect yet, but we can obviously expect developers to further optimize the functions.
Currently Virtual Desktop has provided the beta version of the SSW function. If you are interested, you can visit the Quest Store page of Virtual Desktop. Then log in to your Facebook account and select the beta version under "Version + Release Notes".
